Search volumes during the Oxford Circus non-attack

Posted on 27th November 2017

When news first broke of the apparent shooting at Oxford Circus on the 24th November 2017 there was a huge spike in the volume of people searching for search terms including the term "oxford". At the peak there were an estimated 23,000 searches per minute for the term "Oxford" in the UK. Searches for terms including "London" and "attack" also increased significantly.

I estimate the total number of searches including the term "Oxford" over the time period shown above in the UK at 1.1 million. I've also estimated the search volume of searches involving the word "Egypt" at 47,000 over the same time period.

This data is an estimate of the actual search volumes in the UK on Google. It is based on Google Trends data anchored to some privately known figures that allows an extrapolation to the figures shown above.
